Winter is my Season of Choice!

As I look out the window on this cold December evening, I am filled with joy to see the snow gently falling from the sky. Looks like we might have a white Christmas after all!

Whenever anyone asks me, “what season is my favorite”, I always say with a smile, “Winter!” Some people look at me like I’m crazy. In other people’s minds, they see shoveling snow, icy roads, frigid temperatures, and overall, a difficult time trying to get from one place to the next.

Yes, of course, I am aware that those are situations you have to deal with from the cold. But there’s such a beauty in the winter that you don’t get from the other months. Spring and fall are vivid with their colors, and summer absolutely has its bright days to warm the soul. But sometimes, I feel like people don’t see the beauty of the winter.

Allow me to try to paint you a picture of words to try and justify why I find winter my favorite.

Imagine this: it’s early in the morning. When you went to bed, it was cold, but you could still see the last remnants of the green grass contrasting with the dark grey asphalt. You open your windows and see nothing but a white sheet covering the ground. In the streetlights, you can see the faint trail of snowflakes still falling. The snow hasn’t been disturbed yet, so there are no trails through it. Just a sheet of white.

This is one of my favorite things to see. There’s something about untouched snow in the night sky where only a streetlight is providing light. It fills me with a sense of calm. It fills me with feelings of nostalgia, remembering early winter mornings for wrestling tournaments or snowmobile excursions with my family. Long before the daily grind of life was around. Back when childhood wonder still existed for me.

I believe that is one of the major reasons I love the snow so much. For a brief moment, I’m transported back to my hometown as a child. I’m transported back to a time when life was simple.

Of course, it would be insane to say that I only like the winter for nostalgic purposes. I am a cold-blooded person (semi-literally — my body temperature is normal when it’s sitting at 95–97!).

I am absolutely one of those people who will sleep with a fan in my window wide open in the wintertime if I could. My wife refuses to let me do that, of course, as she does not like the cold as I do.

I remember one time when my wife and I were dating. She stayed the night one winter evening due to the snow, and I had set up the room for the evening. I had my window open and the fan in it. She was shocked, asking, “How can you sleep like this?” I explained that I just loved a cold room for sleeping, and I naturally slept warm. Being an understanding guest, she allowed me to keep my room set up the way I liked it.

This would be the last time I was able to sleep like this with her.

She woke up at around 3 in the morning. Quickly, I was also woken up by her angrily tapping my shoulder. I woke up slowly and looked around the room.
There was a layer of frost over the bed. I could see my breath.

The glare I received from her was enough to make me close the window and even turn the fan off. We went back to bed and slept through the rest of the night. The frost luckily dissipated with no issues, and there were no consequences to a cold room like that.

To this day, my wife still gives me a hard time about the room being covered in frost. I, confidently, respond by saying I would do that again in a heartbeat, as I got some of the best sleep I have ever had that night!

Overall, winter is just a fantastic season when you get beyond the cold and slick conditions. I think it adds a feeling of calm to the world when you are in your home.

Try it sometime! Turn off the TV, put your phone down, and just admire the snowy scenery for a while. I think you will quickly realize that the snow gives you a moment of introspection. There’s something about the season that lets you reflect on whatever is on your mind. Maybe take a minute to reflect on the year you have had. Maybe look forward to the next upcoming year.

Winter is absolutely my favorite season, and I can’t imagine being somewhere in the world where snow is a rarity. I love it too much.

Now I have a question for you: What is your favorite season and why? I’m curious to see if anyone else has a reason beyond the weather. Make a comment here or on any of my social media pages. I would love to see your thoughts!
